An evening of wild water, starlit skies and a little magic beneath the surface.

Have you ever wondered what happens in the sea when the sun goes down?

What does the world underwater look like when the lights disappear? And have you ever seen the sea sparkle in the darkness?

Join Take to the Water for a very special night swimming adventure off the coast of Oban, where we’ll leave the familiar behind and discover the beauty of the sea after dark.

🌅 Our adventure begins at dusk…

We’ll leave Oban by boat as the daylight begins to fade, heading out onto the beautiful waters of Scotland’s west coast.

And then we’ll simply stop.

Sit for a while.

Watch the colours change as the sun disappears below the horizon and wait for the moon to make its appearance.

No rushing. No distractions. Just the gentle movement of the boat, the sounds of the sea and the wonderful feeling of being out on the water as day turns into night.

And when the time is right…

We’ll slip into the darkness! 🌊

With our tow floats brightly illuminated, we’ll gently slide into the sea for a night dip with a difference.

The lights from our boat may attract curious marine life, giving us the opportunity to discover some of the wonderful creatures that inhabit these waters.

Who knows what we might see?

Then comes something rather special…

✨ When the lights go out…

Once we’re almost ready to get out, we’ll switch off the lights, give our eyes time to adjust to the darkness.

Look up.

Above us, a sky full of stars, if the clouds are kind.

Look down.

And, if nature decides to put on a show, we might be treated to one of the sea’s most extraordinary sights…

Bioluminescence.

Tiny marine organisms can produce flashes of light when the water around them moves, creating little sparkles and trails of light in the darkness.

Imagine gently moving your hand through the water and seeing tiny points of light dancing around you.

It’s never guaranteed, of course. Nature makes her own plans!

But that’s part of the adventure.

Sometimes the most wonderful experiences are the ones we can’t predict.

☕ Back aboard…

When it’s time to leave the water, we’ll climb back aboard the boat, get changed into lovely warm clothes and enjoy a hot drink together.

A chance to chat about what we’ve seen, share a few smiles and soak up the last moments of our adventure as we make our way back to the marina.

And perhaps return with a completely different appreciation of what happens in the sea after dark.

💙 Who is this adventure for?

This experience is for anyone who enjoys swimming in the wild and would love to discover the sea from a different perspective.

It’s not about swimming distances, staying in the longest or pushing yourself beyond what feels right.

It’s about being curious, experiencing something new and sharing a rather special adventure with like-minded people.

Participants will need to be comfortable entering and exiting the water from a boat, and swimming in open sea conditions.

Date: Monday 6 September
Location: Departing from Oban Marina area
Time: Departure at dusk – exact joining instructions to follow
Experience: Boat trip, guided night dip, marine-life discovery and hot drink aboard before returning to the marina.

🛟 Water safety

Safety is central to every Take to the Water adventure. This experience will be subject to suitable weather, tides, sea conditions and visibility, with appropriate boat and water safety arrangements in place.

We’ll provide a full briefing before entering the water, and illuminated tow floats and suitable swimming equipment will be required. Any lights-out experience will only take place where safe, with essential navigation and safety lighting maintained.
